The aloe vera plant is a subset of the aloe genus variant. This is a tropical plant that tends to thrive in the most extreme conditions. Hence, some people terms it as an invader of plants.
Basically, all that aloe vera demands from you is a dry environment for its growth. I live in a drier areas of California and I to have an aloe vera plant on my pot. I hardly give it water and it simply refuses to NOT grow larger and larger.
The aloe vera plant has been used as a medicine of sorts for hundreds of years now. Most of the products derived from aloe are gel based. When I slice the prickly leaves of this plant, I get a sticky gel that is what is considered to be high in medicinal properties.
In a nutshell, this plant is easy to be found, needs least amount of care and proves to be an antidote for my fluctuating blood sugar levels.
While I am not much of a garden lover, I do occasionally indulge in pot based planting. So, I have a small area in my house that is dedicated for just for potted plants.
Most of these plants contain herbs and spices. I hardly have any flowering plant except for rose. Now, my association with Aloe vera goes several years.
In fact, I have been having this plant for the past 10 years now. I have also researched and found that apart from treating skin infections, this plant is also known for treating gastric issues and IBS quite successfully.
Personally, I use the sticky gel that emits from its prickly leaves onto my face every night. This has indeed helped me maintain flawless skin. Ever since I started to apply this gel, I have never had acne, pimples, dryness etc.
It is very important to discuss the benefits of Aloe vera. Unless you know what you are dealing with and how it can transform your life for the better, you would never even bother to try it.
Here are the top 5 benefits of using Aloe vera:
Aloe vera plant extract contains a special compound termed as barbaloin. This compound has been known to ease digestive issues. It has excellent laxative qualities.
So, if you suffer from constipation then, it is very likely that consumption of aloe vera shall get the job done. People have also been known to get relief from indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome after consuming Aloe for a prolonged time period.
The gel that comes from the leaves of the Aloe vera plant is excellent for the skin. I often apply it onto my facial skin in order to get rid of acne, pimples and other unwanted skin eruptions.
I believe it is owing to the antibacterial and antifungal properties in this gel to get the job done. Also, the elasticity of the skin is improved via this gel as Aloe boosts collages production. So, it can help me look younger as well.
Another benefit of Aloe vera juice or gel is its antimicrobial properties. This in turn helps treat plaque and canker sores. It has also been stated that Aloe mouthwash has the ability to reduce streptococcus mutants.
When that happens, your mouth is automatically disinfected. Even the thin film of bacteria that tends to envelop your teeth and gum (after a meal) is also cleared by Aloe gel application.
Aloe vera is also used the world over to heal wounds. Applying the gel onto injuries helps the healing process to hasten. In fact, consuming Aloe gel or capsules helps the body to fight infections of various kinds.
For example, you are cooking dinner and your finger gets burnt in the act. Apply Aloe gel onto the affected area and watch the healing process hasten automatically. Sores and bruises have also been known to heal exceptionally fast with the help of this medicinal plant.
Last but not the least, Aloe vera has been known to display fruitful results in fighting dermatitis infection. The seborrheic version of this disease is best targeted by this medicinal plant.
It has also been noticed that people who have used Aloe gel onto their scalp and face have witnessed reduction in red patches and itchiness. It also reduced the whitish scales from taking over your scalp and facial skin.
Well, Aloe vera contains certain medicinal compounds that have the ability to improve insulin responsiveness in my body. It contains essential amino acids and certain enzymes that help increase insulin production in the body.
So, whenever I take aloe vera for a sustained time period (say for 30 days) then, the responsiveness of my body tissues towards insulin is enhanced considerably.
When this happens, my blood sugar levels automatically stabilize. At the same time, the overall levels of tri-glycerides and serum cholesterol are reduced. At the same time, Aloe vera also helps increase the levels of lipoprotein cholesterol.
This action not only stabilized my blood sugar levels but it also stabilized my blood pressure levels.
Please Note: When I took aloe vera regularly, my fasting blood sugar levels reduced by 34.2 mg/dl. I even witnessed a 0.61% reduction in my A1c levels.
This is a very tough question to answer. I have always maintained that not 2 diabetics have a similar body structure.
So, it is almost impossible to comment on whether a ‘one size fits all’ serving of any supplement to control diabetes is an ideal solution for diabetics.
Like with other natural supplements for controlling my blood sugar levels (such as turmeric), I experimented with different amounts before finalizing a dose that seemed to be the best fit for me.
In the very first week, I started to consume 50 mg of Aloe vera gel powder. I took the readings and only on the 6th day did I see any reduction (minor reduction) in my blood sugar readings.
In the second week, I increased the daily intake of Aloe vera to 100 mg. This in turn implies that I was literally doubling it (as compared to the last week). Compared to the first week, the results of the current dose were slightly better.
In the third week, I upped the dose to 200 mg per day. This was in a powdered form. The results that I got at the end of the third week were by far the best.
I continued on this dose for another week and the results were undoubtedly what I was hoping to achieve.
Final Tip: I believe a 200 mg per day dosage is best suited for me. It lowered both my fasting and A1c blood sugar levels.
Guess what, even my cholesterol levels dropped by 9.8%. My fasting blood glucose levels fell by 16%. Even my bad cholesterol dropped by 17%.
There is more than a single way to consume Aloe vera to treat my Type 2 Diabetes. Nonetheless, only a few work the best in your body.
Here are the three that I feel are most effective for diabetics:
The simplest and most suitable way to ingest Aloe vera in just the right quantity is by purchasing its powdered form from a store. There are several nature based stores that offer gel dried capsules of Aloe vera.
In the second method, I slice off a portion of the aloe vera leaf from my pot. I peel off the skin after washing it under running water. Then remove the pulp available in between the leaf.
I take a cup of water and place the sticky aloe vera gel into the pan. I then boil the water and then allow it to simmer for around 12 to 14 minutes (after the boil). The water with the Aloe vera gel is thus reduced.
I then switch off the gas and allow it to cool. Once cool, I pour the liquid into a cup and drink it.
In the last and final method, I eat the gel within the aloe vera plant directly. I slice off the leaves, extract the sticky substance present within them and wash it under tap water.
After the debris and dirt has been cleaned, I place the aloe gel within a bowl of water. I allow the gel to soften – this takes about 20 minutes. Thereafter, I simply chew it.
The flavor is pretty bland. Nonetheless, I do like the ‘bite’ that the Aloe gel has to offer.
Note: That’s pretty much it. I do not like to indulge in any other way of consuming Aloe vera.
Aloe vera is easily available and can be grown at home without a fuss. It does not even need regular watering, as other plants do. So, with minimal care, you can easily hope to grow aloe vera plants at home – in simple pots.
I have consumed Aloevera from both the plant and in powdered capsule form. Both forms are just fine. I prefer the powdered capsules as their dosage is accurate.
As far as the effect of Aloe vera is concerned in controlling my blood sugar levels then, I am quite satisfied with it.
Nonetheless, you do need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid fried/junk food and maintain a positive mindset, in order to keep your blood sugar from fluctuating.
