What is the Current Diabetes Global Trend?

Millions of men, women and children suffer from diabetes globally. The total number of deaths and hospital admissions is estimated to cost a staggering $799.98 billion annually (as per BestDietarySupplementforDiabetics research staff).

This research also deduced that diabetes is one of the leading causes of chronic illnesses across the globe. It may as well be the highest cause of disease related fatalities globally.

Diseases such as blindness, kidney failure, renal failure, heart attacks and amputations of limbs, is often a direct resultant of rising blood sugar levels in the human body.

BestDietarySupplementforDiabetics research staff also stated that more than 500 million individuals the world over are living with diabetes. This number is all set to double in the next 25 to 30 years.

This is a global epidemic.

So, when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I was really scared.

How did I Contract Type 2 Diabetes?

As I have already mentioned, my diabetes was a resultant of my poor lifestyle choice. Till I was in my late thirties, I was super-fit, healthy, lean and energetic.

Nonetheless, when I turned forty, something in me changed. It was like a switch being turned off. I became stressed easily and that led to mild depression.

I quit sports, started drinking alcohol and ate unhealthy. In one year, I had visited more fast food joints that I had done in my entire lifetime.

So, you can imagine where my mental and physical health was headed – disaster!

My diabetes had a lot to do with how I was leading my life. The direction was everything that leads to fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Before I forget, I had also started to smoke cigarettes.

How did I Learn about Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I was a bit scared. It was owing to the very simple reason that I was always fit and healthy. Never till today had I been diagnosed with a serious ailment.

I do agree that I had my share of flu and cough but that was about all. As mentioned in the above paragraph, diabetes was owing to my choice of leading an unhealthy lifestyle that had sprung from sudden depression.

Consultation with a Health Professional:

So, I consulted a health professional for a proper treatment. The medications that the doctor prescribed was not the best suited for me. I had certain side effects that did not please me at all.

Some of the most common ones included nausea, uneasiness, restlessness, indigestion and fatigue. This is when I decided to reclaim my healthy lifestyle to treat my Type 2 Diabetes the natural way.

This included a healthy diet, regular exercise routine, taking natural supplements to lower blood sugar and most important – learning new and innovative methods to control blood sugar levels naturally.

One such superfood that caught my attention was omega-3.

It was advised to me both by my holistic advisor as well as the regular doctor. So, I decided to delve deeper and ascertain its true worth in controlling my type 2 diabetes naturally.

Well, this is what I found:

Did Omega-3 Fats Really Help in Treating Type 2 Diabetes?

Well, after conducting an in-depth research on omega-3 fats, I came to the conclusion that it is just a part of the healing process and NOT the cure.

Simply put, when I consume omega-3 fats via salmon or flaxseed, they tend to reduce plasma triglycerides and lipoproteins. People with normal blood sugar levels have witnessed 20% reduction in both plasma triglycerides and lipoproteins.

On the other hand, in diabetics like myself, the reduction in plasma triglycerides and lipoproteins after consuming dietary omega-3 fatty acids is as high as 50%.

It needs to be noted that these reductions help regular blood sugar levels in people with both Type 1 as well as Type 2 diabetes. At the same time, it needs to be noted that I was consuming 3 grams of omega-3 every day to achieve this reduction.

PPK-PD Modelling Study:

As per the PPK-PD modelling study, just 400 milligrams of omega-3 is what one needs to reduce their blood sugar levels. In my case, the dose was substantially higher.

My HbA1c levels reduced considerably within the first 2 months of including omega 3 into my diet. I also realized that my “insulin spike” decreased considerably after a hearty meal.

When I visited the doctor, he said that omega-3 fats had stopped the remodeling of my adipose tissue and improved my mitochondrial function. He also said that omega-3 intake had improved my beta-oxidation.

This is an ideal scenario for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

What is My Ideal Dose of Omega-3 Fats in a Day?

I have categorically stated that omega-3 fats are good only when they are combined with a healthy diabetic friendly diet and a healthy exercise routine.

Even when I did not have diabetes, I did include omega-3 in my diet as it has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 is also great for my pancreas.

As a diabetic, one needs to maintain optimal pancreatic functionality for insulin production.

So, what is my omega-3 dosage per day for maintaining optimal blood sugar levels?

Well, I would take anywhere in between 3 grams to 5 grams of omega 3 fats per day. I usually keep it to about 4 grams per day. This is not in the form of an omega-3 supplement capsule.

On the contrary, I try and include omega-3 fats via the means of my diet. As I am a vegetarian, I tend to get omega-3 from ground flaxseed. Well, to be very honest, I turned vegetarian after I was diagnosed with diabetes.

Apart from flaxseed, I eat walnuts, chia seeds and hemp seeds as well. Sometimes, I take Brussel sprouts in order to compensate for the lack of omega-3 in my diet.

Some researchers even claim that omega-3 fats have the ability to create beta cells in the human body. So, they can prove beneficial for even those individuals that have Type 1 diabetes.

Honestly, I am not sure whether to believe in the beta cell reconstruction or not. So, I would let this claim slide.

Final Words

Omega-3 fats are not only beneficial for a diabetic like me but also for a healthy individual. These fats can be consumed daily without causing any adverse side effects on your body.

I combined dietary omega-3 fats with a healthy diet. I also ensured that I take a long walk at least three times a week. Besides this, I also meditated for 15 minutes every day.

Basically, in order to maintain good health, I catered to both my mental as well as physical health.

So yes, omega-3 does help reduce inflammation, strengthen the heart and stabilize blood sugar levels but it does NOT cure diabetes.
