Many products on the market make claims such as “supports healthy blood sugar,” “diabetes-friendly,” or “helps improve insulin sensitivity.” But a product being labeled as natural—or simply being sold in a health or herbal store—doesn’t automatically mean that it is effective or safe.
The more important question is: How can you choose a supplement that may be appropriate for you while minimizing potential risks?
Before choosing a supplement, there are several factors to consider, including its ingredients and recommended dose, whether there is evidence that it is safe and effective, possible interactions with medications, your kidney and liver health, and whether you actually need the supplement.
Current diabetes guidance does not recommend routine vitamin, mineral, or herbal supplementation for the purpose of improving blood glucose when there is no underlying deficiency or specific medical indication.
This does not mean that dietary supplements are never useful. It means that their use should have a clear purpose and, when appropriate, be discussed with a healthcare professional.
This article will discuss how a person should go about identifying a supplement and what a person with diabetes should look for in a product.

For many people with diabetes, the focus should be on a nutritionally adequate eating pattern, regular physical activity, appropriate diabetes medication when needed, adequate sleep, and regular blood glucose monitoring.
The current advice from the American Diabetes Association is that, in the absence of an underlying deficiency, there is insufficient evidence for recommending routine use of supplements of vitamins, minerals, or herbs to improve blood glucose in people with diabetes.
That’s a significant difference.
A supplement may be required if there is a documented nutrient deficiency, if there is an underlying medical condition, if there is a drug-associated deficiency, or another specific reason identified by your healthcare professional.
For example, people taking metformin may need periodic monitoring of vitamin B12 levels because long-term metformin use can be associated with lower vitamin B12 levels.
The goal should therefore not be:
“I have diabetes, so I need a diabetes supplement.”
A better question is:
“Is there a specific nutritional or medical reason that a particular supplement may be appropriate for me?”

Sometimes products may seem cheap, but one serving might contain a couple of capsules instead of one.
Serving Size
This is also crucial because it indicates how many capsules or tablets make up one serving.
So, be aware of the amount of pills you need to swallow down in order to get the daily dose of your vitamins.
The Number of Servings
Check how many servings are actually in the container. A product that appears inexpensive may become much more expensive if the recommended serving requires several capsules each day.
Other Ingredients
Do not miss other ingredients present there, such as sweeteners, flavorings, preservatives, and so on.

One of the most common mistakes when purchasing supplements is the belief that natural means safe.

Both plants and pharmaceutical companies’ products are actively used to affect blood glucose levels, blood pressure, liver and kidney function, the ability to stop bleeding, and the way drugs are broken down in the body.
Some supplements such as berberine, cinnamon, chromium, or other herbs have been studied in people with diabetes, but the results can differ depending on the formulation, dose, and study design, making it difficult to recommend them broadly.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that there is insufficient evidence that most supplements are effective treatments for diabetes, but they may cause harmful side effects and interact with other medications.
NCCIH explicitly emphasizes that “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean safe and that evidence varies widely among supplements.
Therefore, natural supplements are not necessarily safe for people with diabetes, and their effectiveness should be judged by the quality of the evidence—not by the fact that they are natural.
This is definitely one of the most crucial safety topics.
Some supplements may have an impact on blood glucose. When combined with insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs, the risk of blood glucose going too low is present.
Other supplements could interact with the way medications break down in the body.
Still others may have an effect on blood clotting, blood pressure, or kidney function.

The NCCIH points out that the evidence for many of the popular diabetes supplements is actually conflicting or limited.
The safest question to ask is not “Which supplement lowers blood sugar the most?”
BUT
“Is there good evidence for this specific ingredient for my specific purpose and situation, and is it compatible with my other medications and health issues?”

Some gummy, powder, flavored liquid, syrup, and chewable forms may have added sugars or carbohydrates.
